One
of my favorite Bible leaders is Moses. He seems so real, so down to earth, so
human. No matter what he did, the people grumbled. It is easy to identify with
many of Moses’ struggles, right down to the time when he takes the grumbling
personally and strikes the rock at Meribah only to be reminded that God is the
leader here.
This
is a great reminder, that whatever we do – life, is about God, not us, not
Moses. And we all know that mistake keeps Moses from fulfilling his dream and
God’s assignment to lead the people into the promised land. But it is the
burning bush dialogue that raises an important question for me. God calls to
Moses from the bush and directs him to return to Egypt, confront Pharaoh, and
demand he set the Jews free. And once
freed, Moses is to take the people to the promised land. Remember Moses
response? He asks a question; a question that that reflects the lessons of 80
years of life -- 40 living high and 40 living low. The question reflects Moses
heart and his character. “Moses says to
God. Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of
Egypt?” It seems like a reasonable question.
However, if we think about it, Moses is not really asking “Who is Moses?” He’s really asking: Who is God? “God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM. This
is what you are to say to the Israelites: 'I AM has sent me to you.'”
How
often, as we live out this B4T adventure, do we find ourselves asking: Who am I
to do this? Moses’ question stands as a reminder that it is not about us. We
are not the leaders; we are followers. We are not the business owners; we are simply
His stewards. God is the leader. God is the owner. This adventure is all about God.
